I had a student go through this. It was horrible for him as he and his mom were very close.

I just asked him every day "what do you feel like doing?" And if he felt like doing nothing, that was ok with me. I never once felt that he was taking advantage of me.

He was not going to be a Spanish teacher and in the grand scheme of things, his mom passing was waaaaay more important.
